April Is National Facial Protection Month
April is national facial protection month, so we would like to take this blog post to remind everyone about the importance of using some form of protective gear when playing sports or other activities.
The ADA is one of many groups that advocates for gear to provide facial protection. It also is joined by the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry and the Academy for Sports Dentistry in supporting National Facial Protection Month.
Every year about 3 million people are treated in emergency rooms across the country for facial trauma injuries. This includes injuries to the skin, jaw, nose, eye socket or teeth and other areas of the head and neck.
Children who participate in contact sports, cheerleading, gymnastics, cycling, or other activities are at a higher risk for getting a facial injury. That is why it is more important for these people to have some kind of gear for facial protection.
Your dentist is a great resource to provide a mouth guard or other gear for facial protection. A dentist is able to provide a customized mouth guard for you or your child, versus something purchased over the counter. The benefit of something that is made uniquely for you or your child is that is will fit very well and be much more comfortable. When a mouth guard fits well and is comfortable, you are more likely to wear it and have its benefit of facial protection. A mouth guard is not of any use if the person it was made or purchased for does not use it.
Talk to your dentist today about what they can do to prevent you from injuries when playing sports or other activities. And what they can do to provide you with facial protection.
