I’d like to whiten my teeth. What are my options?

Posted on in Cosmetic

There are two types of professional tooth whitening procedures – in-office and at-home treatments. In-office procedures will whiten teeth in as little as one hour. Professional products for home use include custom-fit trays which are worn for several minutes daily, whitening your teeth many shades over a longer period of time.

There are a variety of tooth whitening products available over the counter; however, the results will be far less dramatic and less long-lasting than with a professional whitening treatment. Some products are runny and can easily be swallowed. Others are acidic and may damage tooth enamel. Without a custom fitted tray, over-the-counter products may not properly cover teeth or stay in place long enough to be effective. Also some whitening toothpastes are abrasive to teeth and can lead to sensitivity.

Ask your oral health professional for the best whitening option for your individual needs. With his or her guidance, you can whiten your teeth and maintain your oral health for a lifelong healthy smile.
