How To Use Bleaching Trays

Before using the bleaching trays, brush and floss your teeth.

When using the Nite White bleaching material, dispense a tiny amount into the tray. Only place gel in the cheek side of the tray for the teeth you want whitened.

Place trays in your mouth, any excess material that may come out the top of the tray, wipe away with a wet finger or wet toothbrush. Any extended exposure to the whitening gel on your gum tissue can cause a burn.

If a lot of excess material “oozes” out the top, use less material the next time you whiten.
Leave whitening trays in for 45 minutes.

Remove trays and brush teeth to remove the whitening material. Clean out bleaching trays of whitening material as well. Trays can be either brushed or rinsed under water.

Some things you can expect when whitening is a slight tingling around your gums; this is from the peroxide. You may also have slight hot/cold sensitivity. One thing to know is that your teeth will bleach where the enamel is thinnest. You may notice that the edges of your teeth will bleach first. Therefore, you may note a splotchy effect for the first week or so.

You can continue to whiten until a desired shade is met for your teeth. If the shade of your teeth remains the same, that may be the maximum whiteness your teeth can achieve.

If teeth remain the same shade, continuous whitening is not needed. Keep trays until you notice your teeth start to become discolored again. When teeth start to become discolored, do the whitening tray procedure again.

To help sustain the whiteness of your teeth, some things that can be avoided are not eating or drinking anything red (ex. tomatoes, grape juice, marinara sauce, red wine) other things that can be avoided are mustard, coffee, tea, and colas.

If you are touching up with home bleaching you may choose to use Fluoridex Sensitivity formula toothpaste for one to two weeks prior. Brush teeth for 2 minutes per use. After brushing, spit out toothpaste but do not rinse mouth with water. Leave residual toothpaste on teeth. For best results, DO NOT eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after brushing. Apply 2x/day. If you do not have any of the Fluoridex toothpaste, the toothpaste can be purchased at the Smile Center.

If you have any questions or concerns about your whitening trays or the home whitening procedure, please call the office and we can assist you in any questions you may have.
